About Us

The Little Angels Orphanage and Primary School offers nursery and primary school education for orphans in Ruhija and the surrounding area. Founded in 2010, the school is located in Ruhija, a small but growing town at the border of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Western Uganda. 150 of our over 300 students have no relatives and live on the premises. Our dedicated staff consists of our director, 12 teachers, 2 cooks, 2 matrons and a night guard.

Our school projects

Our orphanage school currently relies heavily on donations from regular supporters and visiting tourists. In order to become more self-sufficient we are planing to run several school projects. They will create a regular income to make sure we can cover our costs and improve the living conditions for our children. Some of our projects are already in action, others still need funding to get started.

Pig project

in action

Pigs are hardy animals and easy to feed. We buy them as piglets and rear them to a decent size when they can be sold at the market or enrich the diet of the children. They also produce valuable fertiliser for crops!

Chicken project

in action

We are currently stocking up on chickens. In the night they are locked away in a coop but during the day they roam around in search of food. Local chicken eggs are smaller but much tastier and more nutricious than eggs from muzungu chickens (hybrid breeds). They are very sought after especially in towns and tourist lodges. We are aiming to keep up to 100 chickens to provide us with eggs and he occasional stew.

Goat

Goat project

planned

Goats are ideal for this area, easy to keep and feed. They will provide milk and meat for the orphanage but they need space to roam. In order to keep goats we first need farmland to keep them on!

Tailoring project

planned

It is expensive to buy school uniforms and other fabric items ready made. The cost of fabric, labour and the journey to the next town adds up. With our own sewing machine we could not only produce our own clothes and school bags at a much lesser cost, we could also start our own tailoring business as well as teach the children valuable skills for their future!

Carpentry project

planned

Many of our bunk beds are in need of repair or replacement and as the orphanage grows we need more beds, too. The classroom furniture consists of narrow wooden planks balanced on two poles for the children to sit on. Often there are no tables. With the right equipment we can build our own furniture at a fraction of the price it would cost otherwise. Our children could also learn valuable carpentry skills for the future.

School farm project

planned

The soil in Ruhija is rich and crops like Irish potatoes, passion fruit and many others grow well and bring a good price at the market. Our big hope for the future is to buy some farm land and start a school farm. That would provide us with a solid financial background and the children with a place to train as farmers and possibly a future workplace!
